2022... what in the world happened?!

There are lots of words that can be used to describe 2022, but “uneventful” would certainly not be one of them. Over the last twelve months we’ve seen eight increases to the Base Rate, huge hikes in energy prices, the death of HM Queen Elizabeth II, three different Prime Ministers, and, of course, a rapidly changing and unpredictable mortgage market.

But throughout this period we’ve continued to focus on delivering brilliant service to our customers and you, their mortgage brokers.

TSB...help and support

At TSB, we’ve been supporting existing mortgage customers who want to take part in the “Homes for Ukraine” scheme. With over 100,000 people arriving in the UK from Ukraine, this has allowed our customers to host and support them whilst they seek employment and prepare to live independent, self-sufficient lives.

We’re also doing everything we can to support people through the cost-of-living crisis. Whether or not they’re a TSB customer, we have a team of Money Confidence experts on-hand to assist with everything from budgeting to managing debt. Available in our branches, or via a face-to-face video call, they’re also able to signpost a range of different charities and/or support groups that could be beneficial.

So, what’s next for the mortgage market

As we turn our attention to 2023, it’s impossible to predict what the next chapter of the mortgage market looks like. We should, however, try not to draw too many parallels to the financial crisis of 2007/8. Unlike then, most lenders have money available to lend. Whilst the latest figures suggest demand is likely to decrease, we still have a national shortage of new homes that require building. Next year, the remortgage market is expected to be prolific, driving opportunity for mortgage brokers. So, let’s just take a breath, count to ten, keep calm, and carry on!
